Project Overview

My ADHD Journey is a personal animated short that explores the experience of receiving an Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnosis as a young adult. Combining vector illustration, voice narration, and motion design, the project advocates for neurodiversity by highlighting both the hidden struggles and unique gifts that accompany an adult diagnosis, helping to destigmatize neurodivergence through relatable storytelling.

the Problem

  • Overly Clinical & Dry Content: Existing short films and videos explaining ADHD often rely on heavy medical explanations that feels detached, boring, or difficult to digest for mainstream audiences.

  • Depressing Tonal Bias: Content surrounding late diagnoses frequently focuses solely on struggle and tragedy, ignoring the sense of relief, self-discovery, and creative gifts that follow.

  • Sensitivity vs. Engagement Balance: Explaining a complex, deeply personal mental health journey without alienating viewers or making the tone overly heavy presented a delicate storytelling challenge.

The Solution

Conceptual Pivot - Human to Extraterrestrial Perspective

An authentic, uplifting animated narrative that balances medical accuracy with humor and warmth:

  • Relatable Narrative Arc: Translates complex neurodivergent concepts into an easy to follow, personal story that validates viewers' experiences while educating neurotypical audiences.

  • Uplifting & Humorous Tone: Balances emotional honesty with lighthearted humor to normalize conversations around adult diagnoses and mental health.

  • Tailored Motion & Color Palette: Utilizes a gentle, muted color scheme and expressive character animation to create a comforting, empathetic viewing experience.

The Strategy & Process

Scripting & Voice Narration

  • Self-recorded voiceover tracks to maintain raw authenticity and personal connection.

  • Precisely timed audio clips in After Effects to establish character pacing and story beats.

Vector Illustration & Smooth Motion

  • Built all character rigs and assets directly in After Effects using shape layers and the Pen Tool to ensure crisp vector quality and smooth vector interpolation.

  • Focused heavily on subtle body language and facial expressions to convey emotional depth without needing overly complex backgrounds.
